The Girl Behind the Lens!

Welcome to Amy Symes Photography, a blog showcasing recent work to both current and potential clients!

A little bit about me...

I am a wife and mother of a beautiful baby girl, passionate about art, culture, travel and good food (though, it couldn't hurt if I spent more time in the kitchen!) and of course, photography!

I'm a hopeless romantic with an eye for detail and a great desire to capture those tender, candid moments shared between couples on their wedding day, expectant parents anticipating the arrival of a special someone and families spending precious time together. My ultimate goal is to share your love stories through photography.

Have a look around! Here on the blog you'll find my most recent work or head over to my website/ online portfolio to check out the galleries. Additonally, if you are a bride or couple planning a wedding, be inspired by fresh ideas and real weddings on Wedding Envy .  There you will also find local vendors and other resources!

Think we're a good fit?  Please contact me using the blog or website submission form or at symes (dot) amy (at) gmail (dot) com   (written this way to prevent spammers!)

CIBC Run For the Cure 25th Anniversary Tweetup!

June 28th marked a very special day–my 31st Birthday (where did 30 go, exactly??) and the 25th Anniversary of the CBFC.  In honour of such important events, Wendy of Beyond Events planned and organized a fab tweetup at the Hard Rock Cafe in the market!  (Ok, so it wasn’t really for my birthday, but…) Unfortunately, the weather was really uncooperative that night (think torrential downpour!) but everyone was in good spirits amd surrounded by good company, so good times were had by all! Besides, there were so many treats, including this delicious (and I mean DELICIOUS) pink fondant cake made especially for the event by Reginna Pastery on Preston.

Isn’t it gorgeous!!

Group shot with the cake

Here is one of the guests of honour, doing the official cake cut–Marianne Wilkinson (Councillor-Kanata North)

Did I  mention that the inside was pink/strawberry?  Scumptious!!  Thanks for the awesome birthday cake ;)

Another special guest who stopped by, Lisa Macloed (Nepean-Carleton PC MPP)  Seen here with Rachel Tweedy and her little cutie of a daughter

who was quite the entertainer!

Not only was there cake, but also cookies!  These delightful sugar cookies were made by Chrystal Geoffroi (seen wearing the pink scarf) of Dare to Indulge

We were also entertained by the talented Samantha Testa, a young singer–very talented!

A quick word from Rachel, thanking everyone for their support

Lisa, a volnteer, Murray, the man behind @RunfortheCure and Wendy, our organizer extraordinaire!

When the rain stopped and the sun finally came out, we were finally able to sit outside!  Seen here, Marilou and Jose of 20 York Street, a fab fashion blog! Check out that hot pink!

Jose is also a photographer

Was reluctant to put this picture up because it’s a bit fuzzy and well, that’s not cool, but it’s the only one I got of them! Murray, Catherine Birch (Volunteer) and Juliana Giraldo, and insanely talented, up and coming fashion designer–Miikali

I don’t know everyone is this photo and most have already been mentioned in this post,  except for Meg Wilson (the girl in the front row)–She is a representative from the Ottawa Athletic Club, who is one of the Run’s Sponsor’s.

And I’ll leave you with some fun shots of our resident fashionistas, Marilou and Jose–I told them to “make love to the camera” and they did  :)

Hot stuff!

Don’t forget. the Run for the Cure is October 2nd, 2011!  Two more events to post from Paint Canada Pink Week–the mall walkers of Hazeldean Mall and Bayshore Shopping Centre –the seniors are the best, great fun to share soon!

Fuchsia Factory Fun! #pcpw

Well as you can see, I’ve been a busy bee this week between all these wonderful Paint Canada Pink Week Events, editing and blogging them! I’ve still got 3 more ahead of me to share and the last event was this morning, so more to come yet!  It’s been a crazy, hectic week but I have thoroughly enjoyed getting out to these events planned and organized by the fab Wendy Leung of Beyond Events! I would have to say though, that the Fuchsia Factory event was by far the most interactive and fast paced!  Basically you are speed networking–think speed dating but with business cards! So glad I had some on hand because even though I was technically the photographer, I was still invited to partake in the networking portion of the evening!  How it works is that everyone sits across from one another at long tables and each person is given 1 min 15 seconds to pitch their business/product! When the whistle blows, you stop and the person across from you gets his/her turn!  Once both have given their spiel, everyone moves a seat down so that you are constantly meeting with a new person until you have spoken with everyone!  Fast paced and fun!  What a great way to network!

Five dollars from each registration went to the  CBFC!  Thanks again Wendy for organzing this and a special thanks to Tina who collaborated with Beyond Events to make this happen!  Hope to attend another Fuchsia factory night again sometime!

Bring your cards…

and your personality… (seen here is  Laura Ballester, Sales Manager for Luxe Bistro, Stella Osteria and Blue Cactus – one of my fave restos in the market–best pina coladas ever!)

and let the networking begin! (Crystal Rockey, Account Executive for Kahoot.ca)

When the whistle blows, it’s time to switch!

Peekaboo Beans, cute Lululemon inspired active wear for kids

After all the networking was over, a few prizes were given out!  Those offering the prizes chose a winner at random by choosing from a handful of business cards!

I had my fingers crossed for this lovely candy basket, made up by Sandra Neilson of Urban Country–a shop in Russell that sells the creations of local artists and artisans including jewelry, pottery, greeting cards, furniture, primitive country jewelry and local photography to name a few! (I didn’t win it, unfortunately!)

Here is Andrea from Bez, a gluten-free bakery in Ottawa, with a bag full of baked goodies!

Though I was also not selected for this prize, I did thoroughly enjoy one of her delicious, gluten-free chocolate cupcakes!

If I remember correctly, these were gift certificates from Shoebox Begone, which provides business solutions for small (and large) business owners!  (Bookeeping, taxes, budgets etc.)

This wasn’t a prize, more of a mascot for the evening :)

A group shot–Not sure I will be able to remember everyone from the evening, but here are links to the sites of the business cards I obtained–hopefully it will cover everyone!

(In randomly selected order ) Chantaltal Plunkett–Arbonne Consultant, Susanne Greisbach–Lawyer with Brazeau Seller, Kneale Mann–YouIntegrate, Susan Enns--B2B Sales Connections, Randy Little–Life and Health Insurance and Investment Fund Advisor with Desjardins, Joan Jesion–BeautiControl, Julie Brockzkowski–The Magic Fridge, Lara Wellan–Social Media Strategist and Coach,  Sarah Wilson–Miss Ability, Jason Bellefleur–Family Physiotherapy Centre, Laura Ballester–Sales Manager, Firestone Restaurant Group, Loreto Cheyne–Lola Design.ca, Andrea of Bez Gluten Free, Vanessa Dewson–photography and design, Glenn Schmeizle–Marketing What’s New, Crystal Rockey–Kahoot.ca, Janet Falle–Sales Rep for Royal Lepage, VickyBGisson–Peekaboo Beans, Sandra Neilson–Urban Country, Angèle Lanford of Shoebox Begone and of course, Wendy Leung of Beyond Events and Tina from Fuchsia Factory–If I’ve missed you, don’t hesitate to contact me and I’ll update!

The Breast Dress Project!

The Breast Dress Project, created  by Jamie Johnston of Groovy Linen and Stacey Price of Marry Me Productions, is a fundraising initiative for women who wish to donate their gently used wedding gowns, which are then sold by the BDP.  The proceeds from the sale of these gowns are then donated to support breast cancer research. If you’d like to know more about this wonderful project and the incredible women behind it, be sure to check out the about page on the BDP website!

As this is Paint Canada Pink Week, Wendy of Beyond Events and Catherine, a volunteer with the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation set up a table outside Groovy Linen during the BDP on June 26th with the goal of  generating awareness about the upcoming run on Oct 2nd.  Proceeds from the sale of dresses were going to the CBCF!

Here are some of the pics from the day!

From left to right-Catherine Birch, Jamie Johnston, Rachel Tweedy and Wendy Leung

Jamie’s team of girls modeled the dresses for brides to see what they would look like on

There was even a makeup artist on hand-felt like I was shooting a real wedding!

Her girls were also on hand to help the brides lace up the corsets

This bride tried on a few gowns, as you can see above, but felt really good in this one (below)  We were all so amazed at how well this gown fit her body, without the use of clamps!  As if it was made just for her! We know she really loved it on and felt great in it, but she wasn’t 100% sure and wanted to wait a little bit before committing! Not sure if she ever did go back for this one, but we all thought she looked amazing!  Best of luck to you, hope you find the dress of your dreams!

Ok and because if you know me, you know that I cannot resist beautiful detail shots, especially gorgeous place settings like this one, which is on display at Groovy Linen!  Makes me want to get married again just to plan another party!!

Paint Canada Pink Week!

Hi everyone! I’m so happy to share that I’ve been asked to be the official photographer for the CIBC Run for the Cure, (Ottawa-Gatineau) which will take place on October 2nd, 2011!  Not only is this a wonderful cause, but also something that hits close to home, as it does for so many others. I am very honoured and proud to be a part of it!

Paint Canada Pink week, which goes from June 24th to June 30th, is dedicated to raising awareness about the run and to encourage people to start getting teams together and to be a part of the run on Oct 2nd.  Wendy Leung of Beyond Events here in Ottawa, has been busy organizing events with her committee all week at various locations.  I will be on hand at all of these events to document the activities.   The first event,  which took place on Jun 24th, was held at Yuk Yuk’s on Elgin!  Many came out and laughed out loud at the hilarious rantings of  headliner Martha Chaves.  As there was no flash photography permitted during the show, I only took a few photos during the event, which I have posted at the end of this blog!

June 25th, 2011– Pink Little Cakes!

Yesterday I spent some time photographing the most adorable kids as they decorated cupcakes at the CIBC branch at Carlingwood mall.  This was most definitely a pink-a-licious event! Shakira and Colleen of  Little Cakes Ottawa graciously donated their delicious cupcakes for kids to decorate!  I have a feeling that by the end of this post, you will be craving a cupcake!  Warning-this is a very pink post!

All the cupcakes were provided by

The kids were each given plain cupcakes

which were then beautifully iced in pink icing of course,

resulting in this perfect pink , pretty presentation!

Next, it was up to the kids to decorate their cupcakes with an array of sprinkles and candies!

I JUST noticed last night that the sprinkles in the bottom left shot have tiny little pink ribbons!!  How cool is that!?

Thought I’d toss this detail in here–Left to my own devices, I could do some damage with these bags of pink icing!

Seen here are some of our guests getting to work on making those cupcakes even prettier!

One of the volunteers getting the kids all set up and ready to go!

Yummy! Looks perfect! Ready to eat!

Having a rainy Saturday worked to our advantage because it brought more families to the mall!  As you can see, we had a steady flow of kids coming through all day!

Cupcakes were free but donations to The Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation were greatly appreciated!

More cuties enjoying their cupcakes!

Looks like she came dressed to represent! Miss Ainsley, you are adorable!

Ok seriously, is this not the cutest little guy ever!  I think his name is Jamie!  I took a tonne of pics of this little man because that smile just lit up the room! Don’t you just want to eat him up!?

There were so many cute shots of this little man that I could not decide–so pretty much used them all!

I’m ready for my close up!

Why settle for one when you can have two?

And would could be more refreshing after a scrumptious cupcake, than a cold and refreshing cup of pink lemonade!! Here’s one happy customer!

This little girl was so sweet too! Adding some sprinkles…

Licking the icing off her fingers…

and washing it down with some pink lemonade!

Some kids just wanted the icing!  Well, can you blame them!? That’s the best part!

A few more pretty pink cupcake creations!  Those are some talented kids!

Delicious!!

How can you have just one bite?!

CIBC also had a table set up with a variety of pink products for sale: photo albums, glass magnets, water bottles, dog collars and pink lunch bags!

A special thanks goes out to the staff and volunteers of the CBCF and CIBC Carlingwood

And of course to Shakira and Colleen (who unfortunately couldn’t be present) for donating their time, talent and delicious cupcakes

Save the date!!

And one last image to remind you that you’re never too young (or too old!) to enjoy a cupcake…or two :)   This little guy was only 5 weeks old! (His big brother decorated one for him) Sweet dreams little one :)

Tickled Pink!–A Comedic Kick-off to Paint Canada Pink Week

As mentioned at the beginning of this post, the PCPW kick-off was held at Yuk Yuks on Elgin this past Friday.  Here are a few of the pics taken that night

Sunshine and Sangria! #Summerlude

Tonight I had the chance to get down to the Hard Rock Cafe to partake in the #Summerlude Festivities sponsored by Ottawa Home Magazine Mary Taggart (@ottawaathomemag) did a wonderful job organizing the event, which brought out a great crowd!

Mary (middle) seen here with Kelli Catana (right) (@Kellidaisy), Lianne Laing (left)(@liannelaing)  With the sun and sangria, who would want to miss this tweetup!

This image best captures the essence of the tweet-up (Sangria in one hand and a phone in the other!)  (In this photo–Marilou of Twenty York Street)

If this doesn’t scream summer, then what does!? Summer at last!!!

There were so many fellow tweeps, some that I didn’t even have a chance to meet, but I’m glad that I had the chance to finally put some faces to the names! Seen here on the left is the lovely talented makeup artist Melody of  Melody&Jezebel.com and on the right, Juliana Giraldo, a talented up and coming fashion designer and founder of Miikali (she deisgned and made the dress she’s wearing- so beautiful!) and last but not least, José of You Got Squared Studio No shortage of talent in Ottawa, that’s for sure!

And what Sangria party on the patio would be complete without a bit of Latin Breeze!? The music really was wonderful and so perfect for the occasion!

This woman also did a wonderful job as well, but unfortunately, I don’t know who she is to give her proper credit! If anyone knows, let me know and I’ll update asap!

More tweeps! Left to right Erika Wark (@EricaOnFashion), Lianne Laing of A Morning Ottawa (@liannelaing), back left is TL Rader of Dance With TLC (@DanceWith TLC), Kelli Catana (@Kellidaisy) of the Yummy Mummy Club and far right is Angie Poirier of  A Morning Ottawa (@AngiePoirier)

Erica, Marilou, Melody, TL, Lianne, Natalie (the very talented girl behind the lens at NDS Photography) and José  (Really don’t love how this turned out because of the umbrella in the background, but it’s the only one I had of them where they were all looking :)

More Tweeps: Don’t know them all by name here–sorry ladies! Send me your twitter handles/websites etc and I promise to update! First girl on the left is @coolgirlchris (whose real/full name escapes me!

A great turn out!

and finally, some more tweeting about how much fun everyone was having!  I think this might be Sonya Kinkade of Sonya Kinkade Deisgn but please correct me if I’m wrong!

Looking forward to the next tweetup already!! There are lots of patios to cover in Ottawa  ;)

A Royal Par-Tea with Jeanne Beker! #Partea

This past Thursday, I had the privilege of attending a Royal Par-Tea, a fashion show and fundraiser for the Ottawa Cancer Society at the Museum of Nature.  Organized by the St. Laurent Center, the Royal Partea featured special guest Jeanne Beker, who is undeniably Canadian Fashion Royalty herself!  Jeanne, who is now in London preparing to cover the Royal Wedding for CTV news (what an amazing opportunity that is!), was on site to promote her new book, Finding Myself in Fashion and dazzled the guests with her chic style, outgoing personality and passion for all things fashion!

This event, which also featured a royal inspired fashion show,  raised more than $20,000 for the Cancer Society! It’s not too late to make a donation! Click here if you’d like to donate to this very worthwhile cause!  I was able to get some great shots of Jeanne and here is just one of them (more later on in the post!)

So how did I score a ticket (tickets were $250 by the way and only 125 were available!) to the #Partea!?  Well as it turns out, Twitter is not such a time waster after all!  In fact, in addition to the social networking phenomenon, it is a fabulous way to market yourself, meet other bloggers, small businness owners, photographers and people interested in many of the same things as you.  I had been following Marilou of Twenty York Street and had seen that she had tweeted out a request for a photographer who might be interested in covering the event.  I had expressed some interest but really didn’t think much of it until Ashelle contacted me saying that she was interested in having me go along with her.  Marilou was away on holidays but enjoyed the event via live twitter feeds and photos!  Needless to say, I was thrilled to be invited and am so glad that I was able to go (thank you to wonderful in-laws who babysat without hesitation!!!)  I really enjoyed myself and managed to get some great shots! So without further adieu…

Dazzling and Darling!

The organizing committee at the St. Laurent Center did a wonderful job with the decor!  There were two main rooms-the foyer so to speak, where guests mingled beforehand and were treated to champagne and live music and the reception area.  Here, guests were seated at numbered tables and were served tea in darling vintage teacups and enjoyed hors d’oeuvres and delectable desserts!

The first thing that caught my eye was one of the shimmering chandeliers–who doesn’t love a little sparkle after all!?

The colour palette was striking an bold with black and white damask and a splash of fuchsia!  Très chic indeed!

This area was also used to interview Jeanne

Jeanne even let me photograph her with her new book in between chat sessions!

Guests socialized and sipped on champagne before heading into the reception area

The lady on the right is Carol Anne Meehan, Ottawa’s 6 o’clock news anchor on CTV news! My apologies to the other lady, I don’t know who you are but will gladly update this info if you let me know!

Fashionistas

Ashelle, my date to the partea and Love K

Soon after socializing, Jeanne was invited to pose with the General Governor’s foot guards.

Jeanne with organizers from the St. Laurent Center

Having  a little fun with Twitter!

Now onto the reception area to be seated and enjoy the walk about fashion show!  Upon entering this salon, one couldn’t help but feel as though we were in the presence of Royals as we were greeted by the smiling portraits of Prince William and soon to be Princess Kate, as well as a few other familiar faces!

The reception area looked positively fabulous! A space was created in the middle of the room for the special guests, organizers and speakers

and the tables were beautifully adorned with pretty teacups and treats!

Amuse-bouche!

And while guests enjoyed the goodies, they were also treated to a walkabout Fashion Show, featuring hot new looks found at the St. Laurent Center! The concept behind the show: feature royal inspired fashion, especially the hat!

You know, I have a similar blouse from Tristan that I bought last Spring!  I was even considering wearing it to the event, but ended up choosing a black and white dress from White House Black Market that I recently purchased.  It was similar in style to this dress! Black pencil skirt on the bottom and white with black markings on the top! I guess I should have been in the fashion show too!  ;)

Love the pop of turquoise!

It’s all about the HAT!

As you may have already noticed, the hat or fascinator made more than one appearance a the Royal Partea!  Kate Middleton has been snapped wearing a number of chic hats. so it is only fitting (pun intended!) that people  showed up wearing them!  I myself cannot pull off a hat, but don’t they just look awesome when they do work!?  From Jeanne’s fun and funky swirls to the tiniest feather attachment, here are just a few more fascinating headshots that caught my attention!  They really do make for great conversation pieces!

Having some more twitter fun–because who can resist a live tweet!? #aslightobsession #addictedtotwitter

and of course, nothing beats good old fashion pen and paper!

Linda Eagen, CEO and President of the Ottawa Regional Cancer Foundation

When asked to raise your hand if you knew someone affected by cancer–almost every hand up, sadly.

Jeanne Beker entertaining the guests and answering questions from the floor and via Twitter

Of course Jeanne also signed copies of her new book for her fashionable followers!

The Swag Bag which contained items from Dior, Smashbox, Lush and Petits Fours to name a few!

Well as you can see, I took a lot of photos!  I hope you enjoyed this post and hopefully the photos gave you a glimpse of the partea!  I had a fabulous time and want to thank Twenty York Street (Marilous) and Ashelle once more and a huge hats off to the talented and creative organizers at the St. Laurent Center responsible for the planning and organization of what was a fun, fashionable and very worthwhile event!

Welcome Baby Adam!

Hello friends!  I can’t believe how long it’s been since my last posting! Between a family vacay to NYC (stay tuned!), a trip to my hometown to spend some time with family and a little one to care for, blogging has clearly taken a backseat, understandably! However, I have some time now and am excited to share this session with you!  You may remember Kevin and Natalie, who hired me to do their maternity photos for their first child, Cameron (excuse the old watermark!)

They then had me take some pics of their beautiful baby boy, Cameron

Well, since that time, Kevin and Nat have introduced another member to their beautiful family, Adam Michael. Adam was born prematurely and my goodness, was he ever tiny!  As for Cameron, he’s not so little anymore!  They grow so incredibly fast!

I had an absolute blast spending some time with them in their beautiful new home and as always, they emulate nothing but happiness and love for each other and for their beautiful boys!

Had to include this one haha, love the face!! :)

Don’t forget about me guys!!

Thank you Kevin, Natalie, Cameron and Adam!  I look forward to baby number three ;)

Keeping me on my toes!

Hey everyone!

I wanted to share some pics with you from a recent session with a beautiful little girl named Jocelynne and her mom, Heather.   Miss Jocelynne is quite a mover and a shaker! She definitely kept me on her toes!!  Even though we couldn’t go outside to play, due to a blustery snow storm, we made the best of the space we had and I spent a good few hours following a toddler around (a glimpse of things to come–a great way to keep in shape, that’s for sure!) and trying to capture her essence.  She read us a story, played in her crib, coloured and had some snuggles for mom!  Getting a toddler to “smile!” is no easy task and while there are few shots of her looking directly at me, (she was having none of that!!  I bet Lauren will rebel against the machine too! haha!) you’ll see that we still managed to capture some tender moments.  Enjoy!!

I’ve chosen mostly black and white images for this post because I think they look better than the colour versions, but that’s just me!  I’ll start with two personal faves!

I wasn’t sure how this would turn out because there was actually a fan in the background that just didn’t look good in the picture!  Since there was really no posing or placing of any kind (ok, except for storytime haha!) I had to be ready to catch cute moments when and where they happened!  I was hoping I could rescue this shot and am pleased with the result! I just thought it was too cute not to use!

Graham and Laura ♥ Ottawa Engagement Session

A few weekends ago, I had the pleasure of meeting Graham and Laura, a great couple inquiring about my wedding packages.  From the very beginning of the consultation, I knew that they would be a wonderful couple to work with and was really hoping that they’d decide to ask me to be their wedding photographer! Thankfully, they did!  I was thrilled to hear that they liked my work and felt comfortable with me, because I think they are a fabulous couple and cannot wait to document their special day this summer!

In the meantime, we headed down to the market in downtown Ottawa where nice locations are endless!  Normally, couples do their engagement sessions in the fall to take advantage of the fall colours, but being that we are December right now, we decided to do a winter session and I have to say, I think the photos look amazing!  I think winter really lends itself to some beautiful scenery! Thankfully, it wasn’t too cold out either!  The sun wasn’t particularly shining, but as you’ll see from the photos, their love for one another and their fun-loving personalities really shone!

Thank you Graham and Laura, looking forward to the big day!!
